Shakopee could make a very good case for being Minnesota’s official playground. The city is home to an amusement park, a horse racing track, a casino, golf courses, a poker room and a number of other diversions.

Valleyfair, which opened in 1976, is a 125-acre amusement park, the largest in the state. Less than a decade later, Canterbury Downs received the state’s first racetrack license. Racing started in 1985, and today Canterbury Park is home to both horse racing and a poker room. The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is also held just south of Shakopee every year.

Also located nearby is Mystic Lake Casino on the Shakopee-Mdewakanton Indian Reservation. The casino has five restaurants, a 600-room hotel, convention center, auditorium outdoor amphitheater, golf course, and RV Park.

Quality schools are another feather in Shakopee’s cap. Test scores in reading were 14.7 percent higher than the state average in reading and 24.4 percent higher in math in 2011, according to Money Magazine.

The county seat of Scott County, Shakopee experienced amazing job growth — 76.67 percent — between 2000-2010, and continues to grow.

Even the air is better in Shakopee. The city’s air quality index — measured in the number of days ranked as “good” — is 94.0 percent, which is among the best rankings in the state.
