History

Albertville was named after Albert Zachman, bookkeeper for his brother, businessman John Zachman, who in the early 1880’s owned the land that makes up most of the city today. John deeded the land to Albert on the condition a church be built. With that promise, in 1902, the village of St. Michael’s Station, a stop on the Northwestern Railroad, was born.

By 1904, the church had been built, and a grateful clergy christened it “St. Albert’s.” In 1909, St. Michael’s citizenry followed suit, renaming the now-incorporated township after its founder.

Parks and Recreation

More than 10 parks dot Albertville’s leafy landscape. They sport basketball and tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, dog parks, hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, half- and full-sized hockey rinks and more.

A sense of community is strong in Albertville where there is something for every age group and inclination. Residents participate in many organizations, including the Boy and Girl Scouts, the “Lions Club,” the “MOMS Club” and the Crow River Senior Center. There’s also a snowmobile association to get out and really move during winter months.

For the past 26 years, Albertville has observed an annual June celebration called “Friendly City Days,” a week-long festival featuring carnival rides and games, music and entertainment and a calendar full of activities. There are also fireworks and a citywide garage sale with over 70 vendors. It all culminates with the Grand Day Parade when thousands of local residents and out-of-towners get out and cheer their Minnesota pride.

Schools

There are two public, independent school districts in Albertville: St. Michael-Albertville #885 and Elk River #728. These districts together comprise over 25 institutions of learning covering kindergarten through high school, as well as alternative and vocational training.

Students attend based on whether they reside north or south of I-94, the main interstate that runs through the city and directly connects it with nearby Minneapolis and St. Cloud.

Major Employers

Over 100 local businesses cater to residents’ every need.  The economic heart of Albertville, though, is its Premium Outlet Center which features over 100 brand-name national and international stores stocking everything from designer clothes to jewelry and home furnishings – all at reduced prices.

It’s a quick commute to Minneapolis-St.Paul, where some of the biggest corporations in the country call home. Target, U.S. Bancorp, Xcel Energy, Ameriprise Financial and Ecolab are just some of the firms that are headquartered in the Twin Cities.

Andersen, General Mills, 3M, Best Buy and the largest private concern in the world, Cargill, are based in suburban areas nearby.

Constituent Populace

After maintaining a population below 1,000 for most of the 20th century, Albertville’s populace has grown rapidly in the past two decades, doubling in size every 10 years while maintaining a youthful, hard-working constituency. The city’s median age is 30.9 and claims a median household income of over $70,000.
