Orono Homes for Sale

Another affluent suburb of the metro area, “The Lakeshore City” inhabits the northern reaches of Lake Minnetonka. In 1955, Orono Village was incorporated from the township that bears its name. With over a third of the city’s area considered water, Lake Minnetonka dominates the city’s landscape with its numerous bays and peninsulas but there are also a number of other lakes within the city limits including the entire town of Long Lake. The town has a population of approximately 7,500. While the city has lost population over the past decade, the median house value during the same period of time has more than doubled. This increase is due in large part to the desirability of homes with access to Lake Minnetonka.

Education

Website usa.com ranks Orono #48 of 991 in Minnesota public school performance. Note that most of Orono’s schools are located in Long Lake. There are also nearby options in Wayzata, Excelsior and Minnetrista. The private Hill School (K-8) is the only school with an Orono address.

Major Employers

Since Lake Minnetonka is a playground for the wealthy, many have second homes in the area. Consequently, there are few large employers in town; only eight have 50 – 99 employees, including Brand New Car, an auto body and repair business; Otten Bros., a nursery and garden center; Jem Technical, an industrial machinery wholesaler; and grocer Lunds Markets. The Services and Retail Trade sectors dominate the local economy.

Parks and Recreation

According to the City of Orono’s website, the town maintains 18 facilities including parks, a skating rink, swimming beaches, playgrounds, nature preserves and a nature trail. Orono is also part of The Three Rivers Park District, a park system in western part of the metro area with 27,000 acres of park reserves, regional parks, regional trails and special-use facilities. The city also owns the nine-hole Orono Golf Course, established in 1924 as the first public course in the state with grass greens.

Community Events

A number of organizations hold events throughout the year for residents. The Three Rivers Park District organizes literally hundreds of events each month. During the summer and fall Mount Calvary Lutheran Church hosts the Excelsior Farmers Market on Thursdays and in nearby Mound the Mound Farmers Market & More is held on Saturdays. Many of the local farmers and orchards have seasonal events like hay rides, scarecrow contests and food festivals. Also in Mound the Spirit of the Lakes Festival of Arts is held in July.
