They’ve got (corporate) giants and (recreational) jewels fit for a king, but Maplewood is no fairy tale … even if it is a bit of an ugly duckling, at least on the map.

The city is home to 3M’s corporate headquarters, which leads the way with more than 10,000 employees, according to Maplewood’s 2009 financial report.

If you look at Maplewood on a map, you’ll see it’s one of the most uniquely shaped city in the state. Most of the town lies north of St. Paul, but there’s also a thin strip running along the entire eastern edge of Minnesota’s state capitol. Because of that shape, it’s virtually impossible to live in Maplewood without living within 10 minutes of St. Paul. Three freeways — I-35E, I-494 and I-94 — run through or adjacent to Maplewood, and U.S. Highway 61 and Minnesota Highway 36 provide easy access to other points across the Twin Cities.

It’s a short 20 minute drive to the Mall of America, and shorter than that to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Short commutes are the order of the day for work or play.

As of the 2000 census, the median income for a household in the city was $51,596, and the median income for a family was $63,049.
