One of the oldest cities in the state, Richfield can trace its roots back to the 1850s, when it was a small rural farming community. It officially became a village in 1908.

Best Buy Company moved its corporate headquarters to Richfield in 2003, and that company’s more than 5,200 employees make it the largest employer in the city. U.S. Bank is second on that list with approximately 1,600 employees, as of 2010.
After seeing its population dip for the third straight decade in the 2000 census, Richfield reversed the trend and experienced modest population growth in the 2010 census. Median age in Richfield is 38.1. The air quality index—measured in the number of days ranked as “good”— is 80.0 percent.
Richfield shares a border with Minneapolis, and the easy access it provides to downtown Minneapolis makes it a popular place for commuters to call home. But the suburb with a population of just over 35,000 is far from just a bedroom community.
In addition to being close to Minneapolis, Richfield is also minutes from the Mall of American and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. I-35, I-494, Highway 77 and Highway 62 all either run through or along the edge of Richfield, so you can be on your way to anywhere in the Twin Cities in a matter of minutes.
